“line of time” album retrospect: in grief

IN GRIEF

Next up on the “line of time” album is “in grief”. This track marks another first for ex machina in that respect that it’s the first ex machina track that features a guest. In this case it’s Eva Heuling who is singing the lead vocals on this track.

“in grief” is the ex machina track that features the most traditional song structure ever on an ex machina recording to date. It has verses, choruses and a middle eight… the classic pop song structure. It is also the most common sounding ex machina track to date. Mainly because Tobias and Claudio didn’t want to take too much away from the vocals.

The track is about a person that has the chance for a blank new start in its life and has problems to find a proper use for this chance.

“line of time” album retrospect: garage CLZ

GARAGE CLZ

“garage CLZ” started out as a jam between Tobias and Claudio. They both were throwing around ideas and they both were contributing one bit after the other to flesh this track out. At first it was just a fun track to work on, a distraction in the studio and it was not really considered as an album track but this stance changed over the time and it was finally included into the album. The title is referencing its inception as a jam, as a sort of “garage” track.

“garage CLZ” has easily the highest distortion dose on “line of time”, nearly everything you can hear in this track is distorted. Lead instruments, the bass and even the drums are distorted but they all blend together really well in the mix and the track sounds like one unit. Of course the high level of distortion also added a lot more to the “garage” feeling of this track.

“line of time” album retrospect: dreamer

DREAMER

The second track on the “line of time” album is the more common sounding “dreamer” (common in comparison to older ex machina productions). “dreamer” sounds very much like a typical older ex machina instrumental track with added vocals. This time Claudio had another shot at the lead vocals and this time it stuck. it’s the only ex machina track so far where Claudio was providing the lead vocals. Tobias is taking over vocal duties in the chorus section because Tobias voice was more appropriate in that part of the track.

The track is about creativity and to let it loose. It’s an up-lifting track and again we can find some decent distortion on this track. Mainly the lead riff is a heavily distorted e-piano coupled with some delay that gives this riff some sort of air that fits the theme very well. The rest of this track is very electronic sounding and puts some synths in the limelight.
