“line of time” album retrospect: the instrumentals

THE INSTRUMENTALS

Because it was the first ex machina album to feature songs in a more traditional way, Claudio and Tobias decided to put four album tracks as instrumentals as an appendix on this album. These tracks are “head up (in the sky)”, “dreamer”, “the eagle force” and “afternoon”. “dreamer” is the only track that has a slightly altered production than it’s vocalized counterpart. All the other tracks are merely really just the album versions which were stripped off of the vocals. Just in “afternoon” Claudio and Tobias decided to let the ad-lib part of Eva at the end of the track intact as this bit adds so much to the track.

The tracks are really interesting and it’s really fascinating to hear how all of the tracks are also working very well without the vocals.

This is the final entry in the “line of time” album retrospect

“line of time” album retrospect: line of time

LINE OF TIME

The last track of the album is the title track. “line of time” is about a person that is looking back on its life and sees that life is merely a collection of different life phases that come to an end and will eventually be superseded by a new life phase.

The beginning of “line of time” is just a piano and the voice of Tobias which gives the track a certain fragility. It’s another very intensive track on the album and Tobias excellent vocal performance is the main driving factor of this track. The production is also very fragile in itself and it is also very minimal these two aspects compliment the vocal performance of Tobias in a very haunting way.

“line of time” album retrospect: afternoon

AFTERNOON

“afternoon” is the third track that came out of the collaboration between Eva Heuling and ex machina. The track deals with the thoughts of a person whose love has gone sour and is now pondering with the thought of leaving its partner. It’s another quite intensive track on the “line of time” album that deals with love which has gone away.

The track is greatly performed by Eva and the listener is almost instantly in the story and the mood of this song. The production is quite minimal but very effective and has a very dense texture that adds to the quite claustrophobic feel of the track in the verse which is broken up in the chorus. The track ends on a somewhat hopeful note with an ad-lib performance of the verse melody by Eva.

“line of time” album retrospect: the eagle force

THE EAGLE FORCE

“the eagle force” is another track that started out a bit tongue in cheek. It sounds like it was lifted straight out of a 60s/70s TV series. So Tobias and Claudio both thought they should reflect that in the final release and released it with vocals which mimic a conversation between two people who are doing… well what they’re really doing? Have a listen and decide for yourself… Tobias and Claudio say the recording of the vocals was one of funniest moments during the production of “line of time”.

The track is driven by its string riff which is accompanied by some cool synth stuff to flesh it out a bit.

They also released an instrumental version on the album, because they felt the track should also have a chance to speak for itself without the distraction of vocals.
